Thick grime, burnt up food scraps, stains, all manner of hidden nooks and crannies… make no mistake, oven cleaning is a tough gig (one which Master Cleaners is totally up for, by the way).
There many parts of the house – ovens in particular – that can be difficult to clean. But with tips from our professionals, they can be… well, not quite “easy” but more manageable, at the very least!
Over the years, our experienced team has provided top-notch home cleaning in Sydney… and in many cases, that includes oven cleaning.
Need help? Here are a couple of handy oven cleaning hacks you can use to make your deep cleaning just that little bit easier. And all you’ll need is a few basic household items!
Start by taking the oven racks out of the oven
There is one very common mistake that people make when they start cleaning their ovens: leaving the oven racks in.
You don’t want to do that – they’ll just get in the way and make your job harder than it needs to be.
Not to mention, you can’t exactly clean the oven racks while they’re still in the oven!
We suggest taking those racks out of the oven before you do anything else. Soak them in warm-to-hot water mixed with dishwashing liquid. The combination of the warm water and dishwashing liquid will help loosen grease.
You will know that the racks have been soaking long enough when the build up on them becomes soft enough to wipe away with relative ease.
Once they are clean you can set them aside to dry while you clean the rest of the oven.
Cleaning your oven with baking soda
Next up: the oven itself.
A common oven cleaning tip is to use baking soda to cut through the baked on stains.
We know, we know: it sounds too good to be true. Take our word for it however, it’s a surprisingly effective tactic for cleaning up after you use your oven!
While it’s well known oven cleaning hack that works, a lot of people don’t know how to properly use baking soda in order to achieve the best results.
For best results, you’ll want to get ahold of these three ingredients:
- Baking soda
- Water
- Vinegar
Start by making a thick paste of baking soda and vinegar. Remember, you need to create enough to cover the entire inside of your oven.
Once you have created the mixture, cover the entire inside of the oven with it.
Apply paste and allow to sit overnight
Don’t make the mistake of wiping the paste away too quickly – the mixture won’t work nearly as well if you wipe it away too soon.
The mixture needs to sit for long enough that it dries.
It is a good idea to plan ahead so that you won’t need to use your oven at night time. We suggest sticking to meals that don’t need your oven – this allows the paste enough time to dry and cut through the grease and the build up.
When you wake up in the morning, the paste will have dried and you will need to scrape it away.
Granted, you don’t need to leave it overnight – however, we find that the longer the paste has to spread and solidify, the better results.
Wipe down with vinegar and water mix
Before you start, spray the paste with vinegar. If it fizzles and bubbles, don’t be worried – that’s exactly what you want to happen!
Once the reaction starts, scrub, scrub, scrub! The chemical reaction between the paste and vinegar generates heat, which loosens stains and grease, lifting them away as you scrape off the baking soda mixture.
A good idea is to use a water and vinegar mix. The added water helps you wash away any residue that might be left behind by the paste, making the task of cleaning up after yourself easier.

The problem with cleaning chemicals
Simply put, a lot of them aren’t all that healthy. And when it comes to your oven, that’s the very last thing you want!
The baking soda technique listed above is a good alternative if you don’t want to clean while wearing a hazmat suit. It’s a non-toxic alternative that can be found in just about any home.
Best of all, it’s easy to apply!
Clean your oven, ASAP
If you ask us, you should be putting on the gloves and breaking out the baking soda the moment your oven cools down enough.
Simply put, grease and grime build up over time. If you leave a long time between oven cleans, it’ll just build and build, creating a thick layer of mess that’s downright impossible to remove on your own. When this happens, the only solution is deep cleaning.
By cleaning more frequently however, you can attack messes while they’re still relatively thin. What’s more, if you do it before they solidify, they’ll also come off easier.
The ultimate oven cleaning hack: hire a professional for home cleaning in Sydney!
You’ve tried everything, yet you still can’t seem to make the mess budge.
Alternatively, you’ve left it too long, and the stains in your oven are too hard to remove on your own.
It could even be a case where the grime has spread to the oven vents, which you can’t clean on your own.
